Choosing A Photographer
If you are thinking about hiring a photographer for a particular project or event, then there are a few things which you will want to consider, in order ensure you get the photos you want.
One of the first things which you will want to consider is the purpose of the photographs which you are hoping to capture. Personal portraits, for example, will require a very different style of photography to most images to be used in commercial campaigns. It is usually a good idea to make it very clear to a prospective photographer exactly what you are hoping to achieve with your images, so that they are fully prepared in terms of equipment etc.
You will also want to think about exactly what you want your photographs to look like. For example, most people will have wedding photographs taken as a personal memento, but not all wedding photos look the same. Some couples make want to capture all the intricate details of their special day, such as the rings which they have chosen from somewhere like Seventy Seven Diamonds, or the cake specially designed by a professional cake decorator. Alternatively, other couples may prefer to have photographs of the wedding party themselves, as well as various family and friends attending the event. They may want organized photographs taken at a church or during the ceremony, or they may want to include more naturalistic shots from the wedding reception. You should make your preferences clear when booking a photographer, to ensure that you are able to get exactly what you want.
Lastly, there are some practical points which you should also bear in mind. If your event is based in a particular area or region, you should enquire as to how far your photographer is willing to travel. Browse their existing portfolio to see evidence of their skills and experience as a photographer - you can see examples of my own work here on this site. You should also try to book your photographer as far in advance as possible, to ensure that they are available.
